The Fundamentals of Craftsmanship

This is your “aide mémoire”: a cheat sheet. I spent the last 11 years (software engineering degree + professional work) learning and practicing the fundamental theory of programming and software development. Yes, coding skills are very important, but without first understanding the root principles and modern practices, that coding skill will easily be misapplied and lead to much frustration. It takes time, discipline and work ethic for the big picture to enlighten your mind. But it will be worth it.

My recommendation to become a better software developer / rational developer / craftsman emphasizes: integrating hundreds of diverse perspectives, understanding core principles of programming, deep investigation, and pragmatism. My aim is to understand software development at the deepest levels possible, the way a mechanic understands vehicle repair. If you’re looking for quick “how to” articles or tutorials, this blog isn’t for you. No meaningful hard or soft skills happen impatiently.

But if you respect the process, growth will be exponential, and you will become a good developer faster. And the path to becoming a rational developer / craftsman will be much easier.
